Volvo XC90 Excellence T8 Hybrid Vs Mercedes-Benz S-Class S400

Over the next few years, the luxury car market segment in India is likely to grow significantly and the automakers are leaving no stone unturned for being the first in the race. Latest to make the entry in this segment is Volvo which has rolled out an ultra-luxurious version of their SUV named XC90 Excellence T8 Hybrid. The SUV features a hybrid petrol engine which makes it a green luxury drive. However, it will have to compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which is an already established industry standard. Here is a spec comparison of the XC90 Excellence T8 Hybrid and Mercedes-Benz S-Class:

Both the vehicles are massive and have a prominent presence. Both are more than 4.8 meters as far as the length is concerned and have equally large wheelbases. One difference is that the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is sedan, while the XC90 Excellence T8 Hybrid is an SUV. So, it depends on the customers what they prefer in terms of body style. However, for XC90, there is a slight advantage as it offers luxury with SUV body style in this price range. The consumers these days prefer crossovers and SUVs across price brackets.

It is obvious to expect a lot of features as standard when you are shelling out more than a crore for a car. Well the Mercedes-Benz S-Class S400 has it all, you just name it – multi-zone climate control, infotainment system with rear screen, leather trim and ventilated seats with massagers and memory function. While the S400 has a seating capacity of 5, the XC90 is a four seater. The S-Class gives a traditional feel with wood trim, brushed aluminium and the traditional layout for luxury cars. XC90, on the other hand, adapts a minimalist approach, reducing the number of buttons by moving most of the functions to a large touchscreen.

If you talk about basic safety, both the vehicles come with airbags, stability programmes, ABS with EBD and other features. However, XC90 gets more marks here as it offers radar-based safety systems that it is introducing in India for the first time.

Engine and gearbox

The Volvo XC90 T8 Hybrid gets its power from a 2.0-litre petrol engine. It also features electric motors that provide it AWD and make it capable of doing 40km on pure electric power. Both engines together churn out 407bhp and deliver a massive 640Nm of torque through an eight-speed AT. Currently, the XC90 is the only vehicle in this price range to offer this dual combination.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class S400

The S400 is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine capable of churning out 329bhp and 480Nm of torque via a seven-speed AT. So, the Volvo turns out to be more powerful both in terms of torque and power because of the hybrid setup.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class S400 boasts all the traditional points of appeal for a large luxury car. The Volvo XC90 is way forward both in terms of functionality and appeal of body style.
